Seasonal Roof Maintenance Checklist for NJ Homeowners
A little roof maintenance goes a long way. Catching small problems before they become leaks saves thousands and adds years to your roof's life. Here's a seasonal checklist for New Jersey homes.
Spring
- Inspect for winter damage — lifted or cracked shingles, damaged flashing.
- Check for ice dam damage at the eaves.
- Clear gutters of debris and check for proper drainage.
- Look for granules in the gutters, a sign of shingle wear.
Fall
- Clear leaves and debris from the roof and gutters.
- Check and reseal flashing around chimneys, vents and skylights.
- Trim overhanging branches.
- Have any needed repairs done before winter.
After Every Major Storm
Do a visual check from the ground for missing or lifted shingles and debris. If you suspect damage, get a professional inspection — storm damage is often invisible from below.
Leave the Roof Work to Pros
You can spot many issues from the ground, but don't climb onto your roof. A professional inspection is safer and catches what you can't see.
